On Oct. 9, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, issued a health advisory related to patients developing acute hepatitis and sudden liver failure of unknown cause after using a dietary supplement for weight loss or muscle building. Of 29 patients in Hawaii with acute hepatitis, 83 percent reported using OxyELITE Pro, manufactured by USPlabs, Dallas, during 60 days before the illness; the company has stopped distributing the product. The CDC advises clinicians to ask patients with acute hepatitis about their dietary supplements and report cases that meet the provided definition.
